‘No, I’m not the teacher I want to be’: Novice teacher preparedness and growth

Abstract

The high-stakes nature of teaching has been acknowledged and investigated in research, but the intended results of effective instruction and increase of student preparedness have yet to fully manifest. This qualitative study attempts to determine novice teacher’s perceptions of preparedness to be an effective teacher and opportunities for professional growth within their current position. Preliminary findings show a disconnect between pre-service trainings and their specific position as well as insight into the tremendous difficulty of the first year.
