Exploring the perceptions and experiences of college students and a course instructor about a video discussion technology tool: A community of inquiry perspective

ABSTRACT

The goal of my study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of college students and a course instructor regarding their use of a video discussion technology tool utilized in a face-to-face undergraduate course. This exploration was embedded in the Community of Inquiry (CoI, Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 2000) framework’s three constructs of social presence, teaching presence, and cognitive presence. Nine undergrad students from a pre-service teacher education course and the course instructor were interviewed, using a case study design. The findings provided evidence of cognitive presence within the video discussion space. However, regarding social presence, there were few peer interactions and perceived peer social presence. The teaching presence was also missing. In addition, the results indicated an absence of specification and communication of the requirements expected of the students regarding their utilization of the video discussion tool. In alignment with the findings, some design and research implications are discussed.
