Former Member Jackie presents at APA 2019!

Former member of OU Move Lab presented her research in Transformative Experience and Achievement for First-generation college students at APA 2019
The goal of this study was to gain further understanding of the relationship between Transformative Experience (TE), task values, and achievement for first-generation (FG) college students. TE occurs when students apply class concepts to everyday experience and includes three components: motivated use, expansion of perception, and experiential value (Pugh, 2011). TE has shown to increase interest and enjoyment (Heddy & Sinatra, 2013). We extend this research to investigate differences in TE and task value first-generation college students experience compared to non-first-generation college students over the semester finding that although FG college students experienced equivalent levels of TE, utility, intrinsic, and attainment value, they showed higher levels of cost value and a greater increase in cost value throughout the semester. This may be indicative of the high level of resilience FG college students display in the face of high perceptions of cost.
